Analog Phone Lines

A phone line that uses a conventional analog signal to transfer voice or data signals, often referred to as a Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) line. Sound waves are translated into an electronic signal that is deciphered by measuring changes in the signal’s attributes, such as frequency and amplitude. Analog phone signals can only perform one function at a time: they can be used to place a regular phone call or to carry data from one modem to another like a fax. They also are much slower than digital phone lines, speeds on analog phone lines are limited to about 35 kilobits per second (Kbps). The 56Kbps modems in use today transmit a digital signal over analog phone lines and take advantage of a digital phone line at the remote end to improve speed. Analog phone lines use standard, modular phone jack connectors with four wires and four grooves. The four wires can be used to carry two separate phone lines on two wires each. Digital phone lines typically have six to eight wires and larger connectors with six to eight grooves. Analog lines are typical in most small companies. The service is very basic and doesn’t offer much flexibility.

Local Voice T1s provide local calling area access with up to 24 channels of utilization per T1 (DS1). They also typically include a free regional calling area. For example in LATA 460 in South Florida the free calling area is from Sebastian Inlet to Key West comprised of the area codes 954/754/561/305/786/772. Depending on the region and providers available, the Local Voice T1s can be provisioned as fully integrated circuits, carrying local voice, switched or dedicated long distance voice, and fractional Dedicated Internet Access.
